Breaking down on a motorway

If it is safe to do so, move to the hard shoulder or a nearby emergency refuge area, keep your hazard lights on, and exit the vehicle from the passenger side away from live traffic if you can do so safely. Request your recovery as soon as you are in a safe position.

Booked as motorway recovery

Motorway recovery is booked as its own recovery type. Your job is offered to the nearest available driver set up for your vehicle type, and you can follow them on live tracking while they travel to you.

Staying safe while you wait

The Highway Code's advice for a breakdown on a motorway, in short:

  • Leave the vehicle by the left-hand doors and keep everyone away from the carriageway. Wait behind the safety barrier where there is one.
  • Do not attempt even simple repairs on a motorway.
  • If you cannot reach the hard shoulder or an emergency area, keep your seat belt on, switch on your hazard lights and call 999.
  • Give your location from the nearest marker post or junction number, and your direction of travel.

How do I tell you where I am on a motorway?

Note the motorway, your direction of travel and the nearest junction. Marker posts along the hard shoulder also show your position.

Should I call 999 instead?

If you are in danger, cannot get to a safe place, or your vehicle is in a live lane, call 999 first. Book your recovery once you are safe.

Can I follow my driver on the way?

Yes. Once a driver accepts your job you can follow them live on the map, with an estimated arrival time.
